Project-base 5.5 - Build 10
Project-base 5.5  A new build of Project-base 5.5 is now available!  It is very important for all users of Project-base 5.5 to upgrade to this current release (5.5.0.10), as it contains bug fixes relating to the "move contact" function.

What version do I currently have?
Log into Project-base and go to "Help - About Project-base".  The first line of information will show a version number, e.g. 5.5.0.6; the last part indicating the build number.  If it also shows your company name afterwards then it is a bespoke version and you will need a special set of files to upgrade.
How do I Upgrade?
The upgrade process depends upon the version of the software you are currently running, plus whether you have a bespoke version or not.
  • Version 5.0, 5.1 or 5.5 Bespoke - Contact KMS Support for a set of upgrade files specific to your company.

  • Version 5.1 or 5.5 (any build) - You can download the upgrade file from the Client Area of the KMS Website. Run the .exe and give the location of the Pbwin5 folder. This will need to be done for your server(s) plus any remote PCs. Client PCs require no action.

  • Version 5.0 (any build) - Contact KMS Support for specific advice and instructions.

  • Version 4.6 or Earlier - You cannot use the downloaded files. To move to version 5, the new software will need installing and configuring plus a data conversion will need to be carried out. Any custom Crystal Reports will need converting to the new data layout, plus you may also need a little training to administer the new system. The amount of time required depends on a number of factors, so please contact KMS Sales for further information.
There are Two Downloads on the Website… Which do I Need?

Log into Project-base and go to “Help - About Project-base”.  The last line of information will show the database type:
  • Pervasive.SQL - You need the v5.5.0.10.psql.exe

  • ODBC - You need the v5.5.0.10.odbc.exe

There is upgrade documentation on the website (5.5 Release Notes.doc) plus if you need any help or advice, we’d rather you rang support before attempting the upgrade!  Always remember to backup your system and data files before carrying out upgrades.

Features you may have missed...
Each version and build of Project-base usually sneaks in a little enhancement or two... here are some you may have missed (or not realised the potential):
  • Event Zoom - Right click on a Project, Company, Office or Contact and select "Zoom".  This overview gives all of the Events relating to that record, Past and Future.  The enhanced Zoom give extra info about each Contact or Project when you highlight the Event.
  • All/New/Updated Tabs - At the bottom of the main lists, you can click these tabs to see all new or updated records within a date range.  You can even change the date range at the top!
  • Active/Inactive Records - Certain records can be made Inactive, so you don't have to delete them, but they are hidden from view.  A good example is within a Lookup list; you can make a particular item inactive so it doesn't appear in the list, but any records that have used that item before are not invalid.  Also applies to Contacts, User Contacts and Products.
  • Next/Previous Buttons - When you have a record open, you can use the Arrow buttons to move to the next or previous record without having to close the current record first.  Also works on a set of tagged records.
  • System Reports - "Users Currently Logged In" and "Project-base Usage".  Fairly self explanatory... Try them and see what you get!
  • Right Mouse for Tagged Records - A lot of the things that used to take several clicks, such as applying filters, clearing tags etc. can now be done by right clicking.
  • User details in Mail Merge - Brand new in build 10... the user details are added to the pbwplink.doc file so can be used in a mail merge.  This is based on the user contact specified in the Past Event form, or if that is blank, the User field on each Contact.

Backing Up Your Data
Security We'll be issuing a Support Bulletin shortly with some general advice on backing up your valuable Project-base data.  In the meantime, if you are not the person responsible for backing up data, it may be worth checking that back-ups are being taken!
